How to test a touch screen
There are two things worth checking on any touch screen: whether it tracks your finger smoothly, and whether it responds everywhere. Start in the default freehand mode and slowly drag a single finger in long strokes across the whole panel, edge to edge and corner to corner. The line should follow your finger exactly, with no gaps, jumps, or lag. A stroke that breaks up or skips is a sign of a digitizer problem or a bad screen protector.
Multi-touch test
Place several fingers on the screen at once. Each contact point is tracked and numbered with its coordinates, so you can confirm your device registers the number of simultaneous touches it should — modern phones handle five or ten. If a finger drops out when you add another, or two points merge, the digitizer may be failing.
Dead-zone grid scan
Switch to the dead-zone grid scan and drag across every cell of the grid. Cells you have touched turn green, so any square that stays dark after you have covered the whole screen is a spot that did not respond — a touch dead zone. Dead zones often appear in a band or a corner after a drop or liquid damage, and this scan makes them obvious.
Testing an iPhone or Android touch screen
The test works the same on iPhone, iPad and Android. Remove any case that overlaps the screen and check whether a screen protector is causing the problem by testing with it off. On phones, edge sensitivity matters: drag right up to the bezel to make sure the outermost rows of the digitizer still register, since that is where cracks and delamination tend to kill touch first. If only part of the screen fails, note exactly where using the grid scan — it is useful evidence for a repair or warranty claim.
What this test can and can’t tell you
This tool exercises the touch digitizer through the browser, so it reflects what web apps and most native apps see. It cannot test 3D-touch/Force Touch pressure levels or stylus tilt, and a browser cannot repair a digitizer — but for confirming tracking quality, multi-touch counts and dead zones, it covers what most people need before deciding whether a screen needs service.
