Solid Color Screen
Gray Screen — Fullscreen Gray Test
A neutral, fullscreen 50% gray screen. A flat mid-gray is the most demanding background for uniformity: any tint, banding, or blotchiness that a busy image would hide becomes obvious.
What to use a gray screen for
- Panel uniformity and mura inspection
- Spotting color tint (green/pink/warm shifts)
- Dirty-screen-effect (DSE) checks on TVs and monitors
- A neutral reference for calibration by eye
How to use it
- Click "Go Fullscreen Gray" and step back about arm's length.
- Scan slowly for patches that look warmer, cooler, or darker than the rest.
- A faint vertical/horizontal cloudiness during motion is dirty-screen-effect.
- For a formal calibration pass, continue to the Monitor Calibration Tool.
Why mid-gray is the hardest test
Pure colors mask small errors; a flat neutral gray does not. If one region of the panel drives its red, green and blue subpixels slightly unevenly, the result is a visible tint or a darker/lighter zone. Uniformity problems that are invisible on a photo or a webpage jump out on a full gray field, which is why calibration targets and panel-QC checks lean on it.
Dirty screen effect
On many LCD TVs and some monitors, panning a camera across a gray field reveals faint vertical bands or a grubby, uneven look — the "dirty screen effect." It is a uniformity limitation of the panel, most visible in sports and other slow horizontal pans. A static gray screen lets you judge how much your panel shows before it bothers you in real content.
