How to check your screen resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels your display shows, written as width × height — 1920 × 1080, for example, means 1920 pixels across and 1080 down. The panel above reads it straight from your device, along with a few related numbers that are easy to confuse with it:

• Resolution — your screen’s pixel dimensions.
• Pixel ratio (DPR) — how many physical pixels make up one CSS pixel. A “Retina” or high-DPI display has a DPR of 2 or more, so its physical resolution is higher than the logical one apps draw against.
• Viewport — the size of the browser’s drawing area, which shrinks if the window isn’t maximized.
• Color depth — bits per pixel; 24-bit means about 16.7 million colors.
• Aspect ratio — the shape of the screen, like 16:9 or 21:9.

Native resolution matters

Flat-panel displays have one native resolution — the physical pixel grid. Set your operating system to that exact resolution for the sharpest image; running a lower resolution forces the panel to scale and looks soft. If the resolution shown above is lower than your monitor’s advertised spec, open your OS display settings and select the native resolution. On high-DPI screens the OS may show a scaled “looks like” resolution while still driving the panel at full native pixels — that is what the pixel ratio tells you.

Resolution and defect testing

Resolution affects the other tests on this site. Single-pixel defects are only reliable to find at native resolution and 100% browser zoom — scaling blurs a lone bad pixel across several physical ones. Before running the Dead Pixel Test, confirm the numbers above match your panel’s native spec and that browser zoom reads 100%.
