Honest Limits
A browser cannot measure your display or produce a color profile — this fixes what you can see. For measured accuracy you need a hardware colorimeter.

A seven-step visual walkthrough for adjusting brightness, contrast, black and white level, gamma, grayscale and color balance by eye. It won’t generate an ICC profile, but it will get an uncalibrated screen looking noticeably better in a few minutes.
The seven steps
Work through the steps in order, adjusting your monitor’s on-screen menu (and your operating system’s display settings) as each pattern directs. Do it in your normal room lighting, since that is where you’ll actually use the screen.
- Brightness — set shadow detail so the darkest steps are just separable without black glowing.
- Contrast — set highlight detail so the brightest steps stay distinct without clipping to white.
- Black level — confirm blacks are deep but not crushed.
- White level — confirm whites are bright but not blown out.
- Gamma — aim for roughly 2.2, the standard for most content.
- Grayscale — check for color tints across the gray ramp.
- Color balance — verify the red, green and blue channels look clean and neutral.
Why calibrate by eye at all?
Most monitors leave the factory too bright, with contrast pushed high and a cool blue tint, because that looks punchy in a shop. A few minutes with these patterns fixes the worst of it: you’ll recover shadow and highlight detail, tame an obvious color cast, and get gamma into the right ballpark. That is enough for everyday use, photo viewing and gaming. What it can’t do is give you measured, repeatable accuracy — two screens that both “look right” by eye can still be visibly different side by side.
When you need real accuracy
If you edit photos or video professionally, print, or need two displays to match, visual calibration isn’t enough. A hardware colorimeter sits on the screen, measures the actual light coming off it, and builds a correction profile with known error (ΔE).
